Richmond Catholic Theatre, which recently celebrated its first anniversary, has received a rare invitation from the Vatican to perform at World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland this July 29.

World Youth Day is held once every three years at a predetermined host city and draws millions of young people and young adults from around the world. Pope Francis will attend and participate in events there.

The theater group will perform The Jeweler’s Shop, written by Saint Pope John Paul II in 1960 when he was the auxiliary bishop of Krakow.

Five members of the Richmond Catholic Theatre rehearsed earlier this week in a nearly empty Saint Benedict Catholic School. The crowd was about 3 million fewer than the one they’ll be performing for at the end of the month.

Richmond, Va. – Richmond Catholic Theatre, which celebrated its one-year anniversary on June 19, has received a rare invitation from the Vatican to perform at World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland this July 29....

St. Joseph Catholic Church, 151 Washington St., Petersburg, will host a presentation of The Jeweler’s Shop, performed by Richmond Catholic Theater, on Fri., May 13 at 7:30 p.m. A potluck dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the commons and a question and answer session will be held immediately after the presentation. Donations will be accepted to offset the costs of the performers.

Richmond Catholic Theatre will present St. Pope John Paul II’s “The Jeweler’s Shop,” as part of the Acts of Faith Festival on Friday, January 29, and February 5-6, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church and at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, respectively. On Saturday, February 6, there will be a Polish Dinner sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The free performances will be followed by a talk with the actors.
