We have been approached by a playwright to workshop and produce a new play he has written about Our Lady of Guadalupe!
This play would open a lot of hearts to the Glory of God through the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe and it would give Richmond Catholic Theatre to reach out to the vibrant Latino community here in Richmond.
The play calls for a diverse cast and challenges the audience to partake in the climax -- no spoilers here!
Here's the thing, we are committed to upholding the dignity of the human person. Part of that dignity includes a living wage.
This is an issue that I am passionate about, as an actor in Richmond, it is rare to be paid minimum wage for the performance, let alone for the many hours of rehearsal that go into producing a play. As an artist, the experience can be so valuable that we find other ways to pay rent, groceries, and bills. We hold no animosity towards any theatre companies in town -- we understand (now) how hard it is to keep your doors open and pay actors a living wage.
Even though it is hard, by the Grace of God, we are going to do it.
As we launch into our next season, workshopping and premiering this play about Our Lady of Guadalupe, we are also going to pay our actors minimum wage for rehearsals and performances. This workshop is going to require an 8 week rehearsal period and 6 performances.
